Christopher Columbus

So today we read two letters that Columbus wrote concerning his journeys and the discovery of America. If you are interested in seeing some more of what he had to say, here is a link to a digital scan of a book that has more letters! Enjoy.

Homework, September 16th, 2011

1.) Read The Settlement of Jamestown 1607. Don't let the language scare you! We'll discuss that in class on Monday.

2.) Choose from the following assignments:
      - Pretend that you are Christopher Columbus, and are writing a letter back to a friend about your journey and discovery of a new land. Because this is a friend, you can be more honest than if you were writing to the king. What are you feeling? What challenges are you facing? What are you finding exciting?
      - Imagine that like John Smith, you are getting ready to establish a colony in a new land. What supplies do you need? What challenges do you anticipate facing? What sort of things will you need to do first off when you arrive in the new land?

Have fun with this assignment! They can be as long and as creative as you wish to make them, however you must have at least 200 words. Your assignment is due Monday 9/19 in class.

Hello!

Welcome to the introductory year of American Literature! I think that we are going to have a lot of fun as we read the words of the Founding Fathers, stories searching for the American Dream, and accounts of events that have happened in our country. Let's get started!
